The barracks

A non-commissioned officer cross bay

When at rest, the fort’s non-commissioned officers stayed in their dormitory, which was provided with 23 bunks. They had their meals in their mess, i.e. the room attached to the dormitory.

As for the private soldiers, seeing that they had to do without a canteen, they used to have their meals by twos or threes at the drop-leave tables, fastened to and along the inner corridor left wall.
