The barracks
The barracks : a water pump-station
After crossing a small airlock you have
come inside the Fort’s Barracks, up to the drinking-water
pump-station. The two storage cisterns were permanently
replenished by a 117 m deep well, located in the back of the
bigger tank.
Electrically operated pumps spurted the
water through the pipes as from the storage tanks throughout the
Fort. There were actually two different water networks, one of
which was to supply drinking water whereas the other to cope with
fire emergencies.
